I love wind chimes. They are a peaceful way to remind us of all the forces in nature that we can’t see. Wind and water are the two most calming elements in the garden. You can use both to create backyard projects to add relaxation to your backyard. Make your own DIY wind chimes! Then hang them on your porch or patio, in a tree, or from a fence to add that little tinkle of happy sounds all through your garden space! So, you ready to get crafty? Let’s learn how to make wind chimes!
How to Make Wind Chimes
DIY Wind Chimes with Color
Our first project is from ‘Lifestyle for Real‘. She made these from small ceramic ornaments, sharpie markers and rubbing alcohol with a special paint technique. Every single one of these made will be one of a kind by the nature of the painting method. You could stick to just one color, add metallics, or make it as colorful as the rainbow. And we imagine the ceramic ornaments will make the most pleasant sounds in the breeze! There are step by step instructions and a full supply list.
Another colorful wind chime idea comes from ‘Inner Child Giving‘. This is a simple tutorial for their key DIY wind chime. I love the bright colors they use, and also the simple and repurposed materials. You could choose a more subtle color scheme as well. This would be a great wind chime to make with the kids!
‘Crafty Morning‘ made this DIY wind chime with spray paint, some inexpensive metal washers and craft beads, a piece of driftwood or scrap wood as a base and twine. Make sure you have an open area to spray paint with good ventilation. This is another project where you can choose just how to customize the look. Lots of color, or simple with just one? Sunset colors, or colors of the water? All up to you!
Create these colorful DIY wind chimes with the tutorial by ‘My Home My Style‘. A flower pot and pretty shells, I can just hear the delicate sound this chime would make!
Sea Glass Wind Chimes

You can buy sea glass from several online craft stores like Save-On-Crafts.com or Etsy. Easy DIY Chimes
If you want a statement wind chime idea, then try this project from ‘Sugar & Cloth‘. Made from a round, small planter pot, some wooden beads and some faux leather cording, this will take 10 minutes start to finish. And it’s so pretty! The chime sound is created by the wood beads bouncing against the neck of the planter.
This macrame wind chime from ‘Pretty Life Girls‘ is an easy project with modern boho vibes. You will need yarn, macrame rings, metal chime parts and this very tutorial to walk you through it. Lots of photos for each step, and links to further instruction if you need more help with the macrame knots. The result is a simple, modern feel with a throw back boho chic look.
This moon phase wind chime from ‘Curbly‘ shows every phase of the moons rising and setting. What a perfect thing to have in the garden! Made with oven bake clay and beads, this can be done in an afternoon. Always remember, the smaller the pieces of your wind chime, the higher in tone the sound will be. Be sure to go check out the photos of the moons close up. The beading within the clay makes these chimes so pretty with texture and interest. I’m wondering, if you are going to hang these outside, would it be good to spray the moon pieces with exterior sealer before assembly?
Learn a little about the history of the wind chime, then learn to make this terra cotta DIY project from ‘Garden Therapy’. And therapy these would be, both in the making, and in the hearing. Do you know where wind chimes originated? She does!

Driftwood Project
If you don’t love a loud wind chime, then try out this driftwood DIY wind chime idea from ‘Simple Nature Decor‘. When we first saw this project, we thought it was just a pretty hanging decorative idea. But she swears it makes a gentle sound with the driftwood hitting each other in the wind. In any case, it’s gorgeous, it’s easy, and it’s nearly free to make!
‘Homemade Heather‘ used beads and pendant with driftwood pieces and twine to make this very pretty driftwood wind chime.
